FAQ

Common questions

What exactly is XAU/USD and why is it quoted in dollars?

XAU/USD is the spot price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, and gold is quoted in dollars because the global bullion market settles in that currency. One standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, so the reference price of about 4275.0 means a standard lot carries roughly $427,500 of notional exposure.

What moves the gold price during a South African trading day?

Gold responds to the US dollar, real interest rate expectations, central bank buying and demand for defensive assets. It also reacts to US data releases and Federal Reserve communication, which land in the South African afternoon and evening. Rand-based returns add a second variable, because a stronger rand can offset a dollar gold gain for a South African holder.

Is a 4275.0 gold price high or low, and does that change my lot size?

Whether it is high or low is a judgement about history, not a fact the site can settle, but the price level does change your arithmetic. At about 4275.0, each 0.01 pip is worth $1 per standard lot, so the same lot size carries larger rand swings than at a lower price. Size from risk, not from the headline number.

Does gold trade over weekends for a South African account?

No, spot gold closes for the weekend, so a position held into Friday's close carries weekend gap risk that no stop can cover. The market reopens on Monday morning in our time zone. Events over the weekend, including rand-moving news, can reprice XAU/USD before your first chance to react, which is why some traders reduce size before Friday.

How much can I lose on gold if the market moves against me?

More than you deposit, because gold is leveraged and losses scale with position size, not with your balance. A standard lot moves $100 for every 1.00, so a 20.00 adverse move is $2,000 before conversion to rand. That is why the margin figure is not a loss limit and why a defined stop is part of the trade, not an optional extra.
